SPORTING
THE WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING. TRAINING NOTES. The weather was fine on Saturday morning, and the training work at the Hutt was of an interesting order. A fast six furlongs Was travelled by Searchlight and Heavenly Twin. Saracen ran over the same distance at a sound pace. Golden Plover and Planet were associated in'a useful gallop. They were cantered once round slowly, and then jumped off for a flutter over a mile and a quarter, of which Golden Plover had, the best,' finishing strongly, but Planet was eased up at the turn and allowed to rim on the last furlong steadily. Lady Zetland, looking fresh, cantered once round, finishing another round at a strong pace. Clarence put in half pace over two miles. Lottie, after doing one circuit steadily, slipped over anothei circuit at a good,three-quarter pace, moving freely. ?Arius and Mahaki moved off smartly for a once round, and the two-year-old St. John joining them at the - six-furlong post, they strode along ; at a merry pace. Mahaki and St. John finished together, just in front 1 of Arius, the latter acquitting him- . self fairly well, but it is said he is not a i goocßraok horse. Review is an improbable ; starter at the meeting. - i Taking advantage of the mild weather yesterday morning, a number of spectators , attended to witness training operations, ■ when fully 50 horses were* on the track. Golden Plover ran two miles at a sound i pace, finishing strong and pulling up well. > Knpua and Penroso got over two miles, the j last mile at a good three-quarter pace, j Searchlight traversed a mile smartly, j Master Key put in two rounds at a service- . able pace, and Bouquet bad the same task. , Koscfeldt (Lindsay), North Atlantic (White) and Westmere (Whittaker) were spun out .over one mile and a quarter. The trio were shaken up at the finish. North Atlantic having all the best of the flutter, while Rosefeldt finished in front of Westmore. This was the best run from a spectator’s point of view that has been seen on the track during the week, but although the trio wore travelling all the way, it was not ft watch smashing gallop. Porepo had a good three-quarter pace gallop over two miles, and Oddfellow did two miles at a good half pace. - Lottie finished ft fast once round in, a very ■satisfactory manner, and although she was by herself, the gallop appeared to be as good as that recorded by North Atlantic and company. Neither Vivacious nor Voltaire, who were worked separately once round, 1 appeared to create a favourable impression. The fonnoris a trifle short of work. Black and Bed, St.? J ohn and Britomarte cantered to tho fiye-furlong post and thou were brought along smartly, Britomarte dodging along behind them, but St. John had slightly tho best of Black and Red at tho finish. Senator and King’s _ Bowman were associated in a six-fur-long spin, the latter finishing in front Mahaki galloped two. miles at threequarter pace pleasingly. Princess Cole had all tho beat of Morrymau over eight f urlongs. ’ Eangipuhi ' was anxious to go faster than half pace over two miles. Other work of minor importance was done, tuf, cur. ? The meeting promises to be a great success, and as the Cup is voted a turf puzzle, there should be an'exciting race. Lottie, Mahaki, Lady Zetland, North Atlantic and Golden Plover are the popular selections, and favouritism is very evenly divided. TIPS. ■By "Gif syKing."
