Xu reply to a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce who informed Mr Duffy, Postmaster-General, that the Chamber was unanimous in favour of the Pacific cable being laid at an early 'date,' tho Minister agreed that it'would bo a good thing to have a telegraph line mainly through British possessions, and a great advantage in time of war. It was understood that the Pacific cable would, cost £1,800,000, and in the present condition of things Victoria was not in a position to go in for it.
