The Special Committee of the Corporation of London appointed to consider the scheme for the unification of London opposes the amalgamation of the Corporation with the County Council, and advises the creation of separate municipalities, with a central body for certain purposes. THE COSTA RICA PACKET CASE. London, January 8. Dr Creed, of Sydney, in a letter to the Times, urges that the inaction of the Government in the Costa Rica Packet case has injured the Imperial prestige in Australia, and is tending to weaken the ties between tbo colonies and the Mother Country. PRANCE AND ITALY. Paris, January 8. -The Italian Minister at Paris has been recalled, owing to the attacks of the French press on Italy. RELIEF FOE THE NEWFOUNDLAND GOVERNMENT. Ottawa, January 8. The Bank of Montreal has assisted the Government of Newfoundland with a shipment of specie. THE LEADERSHIP OP THE IRISH PARTY. London, January 7. Mr Healy, in recent speeches, indicated that there was a split amongst the Irish Party on the question of the leadership. Received January 9, 0.50 a.m. London, January 8. Mr Gladstone, replying to an address from Irishmen previous to his departure for Cannes, urged the burial of internal discords, and hoped the leaders in America would insist on the union of parties in Ireland. THE LAND TAX PROPOSALS IN VICTORIA. London, January 7. The Times ad vises the Victorian Treasurer to exercise extreme caution in pushing his Land Tax proposals, as there is ample evidence, it says, of the producing interest being already taxed to the breaking point. THE CABLE GUARANTEE. London, January 7. The - action of Victoria in proposing to withdraw from the cable guarantee causes some anxiety in commercial circles, and an increase in the tariff is inevitable if the agreement is broken'. Enquiries have been made as to the probable obligation of the colonies this year, and it has been shown that not more than .£7OOO will be required. Therefore the action of tho Victorian Government is considered to bo unjustified. Should the cable tariff be increased it is likely to affect the wiring of market quotations for Australian produce and mining ventures.
