WHARF LABOUR.
TO THE EDITOR. Sift,—Allow.me space in your columns to make a lew-remarks on the above. There are many men that visit our wharfs ©very day, anxious to get a day's work, or even a few hours, that they may earn a>. few shillings to take home to their hungry families. Then, sir, I ask why are men with farms allowed to come in from the country and obtain regular work ? At all events regular in the summer, and a big share in the winter. I say such’ men should bo .sent about their business, and told to go and work their farms, and make room for poor men that are so much' in need of work'. Further, I ask why are tally clerks that get 10s a day regular allowed to work overtime and get 2s Odper hour ? Surely it does not require ■ very learned men to be. tally clerks, and .there are plenty of men who would be glad to. work at night to earn a few shillings. I trust our Harbour Board secretary,- or whosesoever business it is, will attend to whatl consider a piece of injustice.—l am; • A Farmer,
