OHINGAITI.

From Our Oum Correspondent. A meeting of the members of the congregation of the Church of England was held in Howarth and Aldridge’s Hall on Monday (the Rev Mr Devonish in the chair), to decide on the best means of clearing the section of land which was kindly given by Mr Bell, sawmill proprietor, of Halcombe and Ohingaiti, for the purpose of erecting a church and mission house. Messrs Floyd, Woods and Howard were elected a committee to supervise the clearing and fencing of the same. A Building Committee, consisting of Messrs Floyd, Woods, Pedder, Wansill, Carver, Stent, Simmonds, Hicks and Mills, was formed, and a number present offered-their services to form a working bee. Several of the residents have expressed their appreciation of Mr Meehan in giving the free use of his hall for holding religious services, and to Mr Aldridge for his services as lay reader, Mr Peters informs me that on account of the bad state of a portion of the road between here and Waiouru, 15 miles of which is now almost impassable for vehicles (this portion is in the bush), ho will pack the mails from here to Waiouru, and from there he will run the coach as usual to Tokaanu.. The roads in the clear country are in a very good state. Mr Peters says nothing can be done to repair the road this winter, but he hopes the road will be put right in the summer, so that there will be no interruption of a conch service the whole of the year. He deserves credit for the satisfactory way he is carrying the mails. He always comes up to time whether the weather is fine or not. The Foresters are busy preparing for a concert, farce, and art union, which are to come off on the 17th of this month. They have about 70 prizes for the art union, and I am informed the talent for the concert and farce will bo of first-class order. I will send you full particulars later.
