FOOTBALL.

Tho play of the Taranaki team in the match against Auckland last Saturday is very highly spoken of. The team played with great dash and combination, and many people who saw the match think that the Taranaki men will defeat Wellington. The match is to be played at Hawera on the 4th September, and of course the Taranaki team will have the advantage of playing on its own ground. There will be a great deal of excitement over the contest, and the result will be looked for with interest. This will be the first meeting between Wellington and Taranaki teams. The match between the United Tradesmen and St. Patrick's College took place yesterday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the former by 9 points to 8, after a well-contested game. For the losers McCarthy and Driscoll scored, Cullen converting the latter's try. For the winners, Graham (2) and Marshall scored, neither of the tries being converted.
