The Wellington Garrison Band gave ap excellent pprforipauce op ’ the' Thdrnddn Esplanade yesterday afternoon ip aid of the Unemployed. The sum collected was jed, 1% 3d: * The wharf shelter was full both op Saturday and last pights. There were s'eyep casuals in the Benevolent Home on Saturday night and eleven last night, and 720 meals were served in the Home during Saturday and Sunday. The following paragraph is from the Palmerston Times :—“ Last week a statement was made by one of the unemployed at Wellington to the effect that a number of men and several women had been homeless at Palmerston. Mr Eutherfurd, the agent of the Bureau, was away at the time, but upon his return made every enquiry into the allegation, with the result that ho could not discover a tittle of evidence to justify such a statement. He could not hear of any men being compelled to sleep out, but he did hear of a woman, who has since left the district, who passed the night in a stable. There are a few men out of work in the district, but they are all of a steady class, and some evidently can afford to wait for a job to their liking before turning to.”
