DRAWING EXAMINATIONS.

The annual report on the first grade drawing examinations was presented to the Wellington Education Board yesterday by Mr A. B; Hi Icy ■ and Miss Eichardson. It shows that out of 4897 papers there were 3105; passes, and 2530 individuals passed out of 3185 candidates. • Ninety-one schools were represented, and all round the figures showed an advance on those of last year. The establishment of 62 scholarships by the board had' been productive of good results. With respect to the different styles, the examiners say that freehand does not show much improvement on last year’s l work,, appreciation of the general construction of the figure not being shown. The results under examination were not always satisfactory, because of the insufficient attention given to the method of blocking in the work. In geometrical drawing, though’ a large amount of the work was satisfactory, there appeared generally to be a want of understanding as to principles. The examiners suggest that-learning a series of problems by heart will never enable students to apply their knowledge to practical work, and advocate greater use of the solids protided for class instruction. Scale drawing was very satisfactory, and they recommend that as much work as possible be done from actual measurements. Model drawing has made considerable advance since last examination; all the city and most of the larger schools presenting candidates. The following are the results shown by the different schools: —Clyde quay, examined 414, passed 281; Mount Cook Girls’, 235—164; Mount Cook Boys’, 306—204 ; Newtown, 303—228; Terrace. 329—257; Te Aro, 398—196; Thomdon, 324—230; Petone, 175—131; Hutt, 78—45 ; Masterton, 195—137 ; Greytown, 116—71; Featherston, 71 —48; Carterton, 52—26; Clare-’ ville, 69—32 • Mangatainoko, 45—31; Eketahuna, 38—29; Karori, 52—22; Johnsoutille, 67 —19; Kilbimie, 60—34; Vogeltown, 71—41; Taita, 27—11; Otaki, 25 —l2; Kaiwarra, 27 l 4; Levin, 47—27 ; Kaiwaiwai, 19—9; Taueru, 26 14; Pahiatua, 22—9; Wadostown, 26—14; Paraparaumn, 22—6; Manakau, 17 10Wellington College, 34—27; Pahautanufi 13—9; Tawa Flat, 20—14; Manriceville’ East, 21—11; Maungawa, 10—9; Makara, 11— 4; Wainui-o-mata, 22—11; Waihakeke, 15— ; Belvedere, 17—11; Feniridge, 15—6; Matarawa, 10—7; Pirinoa, 15—4; Te Whiti, 16— 9; Shannon; 10—7; Maurice villa West; 15—11; Newman, 14—4; - Ohau, 12—■■ Oharip, 11—-6; Kaitara, IS 8; Hast, well, 13—4; Eaitoki, 9—3; ‘Cross Creek, 21—13; Whiteman’s, 15—5; Balefield,l2—4; Kereru, 7—2; Gladstone, 9—6; Tenui, 9—3; Khandallah, 9—-S; Breyerton, 6—6; Wangaehu, 12— 5 ; Waingawa, 5—5; Wallacerille, 10 —1; Tutaekara, 9—o; Ballanoe, 5—2 ; PaikakariM, 3 —3; Mrs Mcßonnell’s,6—s; Mangaone, 16—2 ; Judgeford, 10—2 ; Korokoro, s—l; Kaitawa, 2—l; Te Eangitumau, 3—2; Mr Gardner’s, 2—2; Mr Webb’s, 2—2; Wanganui. 56—42.
