Messrs Huddart, Parker and Co. have chartered the s.s, Arawa to replace the Miowera in the Canadian trade. The Arawa will start from Sydney on 18th November. The chartering of this steamer is regarded as a favourable opportunity of testing what chance there is for opening up a frozen meat trade with Canada. NEW ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION. London, October 24. A Norwegian whaler has started on an attempt to discover a whaling ground in the vicinity of Victoria Land, in the Antarctic Ocean THE OUTLOOK IN EUROPE. Rome, October 24. The Premier (the Marquis <li Rudini) says Italy is conscious of impending danger, and must strengthen her army. THE BRAZIL REVOLT. New York, October 24. Admiral Mello has proclaimed Lorena, the captain of one of the insurgent vessels, as the provisional President of Brazil. A second attempt has been made to assassinate Admiral Mello, but without success. ULSTER AND HOME RULE. London, October 24. The Duke of Abercorn will be elected President of the Ulster Assembly. THE IRISH PARTY. London, October 24. It is reported that Mr Sexton is about to resign and be appointed a Commissioner of Education. Mr Davitt’s certificate of discharge in bankruptcy has been refused. THE COLONIES AND THE HOME PARLIAMENT. London, October 24. . Mr Hogan, M.P., in an article in tbo Contemporary Review, urges that the colonies must federate before they can secure representation in the House of Commons. Tho newly-formed Colonial Party is meanwhile developing into a non-official committee of the Lords and Commons. THE SILVER QUESTION. Washington, October 24. ; The Republican Senators liave refused the proffered compromise on the silver question, declaring tho proposal to be a cowai‘dly-makeshift. Received October 26, 1 a.m. Washington, October 25. The Democrat silver men in the Senate have consented to the question going to the vote in a week. THE SUFFRAGE IN AUSTRIA. . Vienna, October 24. Count Taafe, Austrian Minister for the Interior, intends to .proceed with his Manhood Suffrage Bill, declaring it to be impossible to resist the claims of the labouring classes to votes. THE PRANCO-EUSSIAN ALLIANCE. Paris, October 24. At a meeting between the President and the Russian Admiral, the former said the visit of the Russians would leave perpetual memories, and hopes for mutual friendship. Admiral Avelon said the universal prayer in Russia would be for the prosperity of France. Received October 26, 1 a.m. Paris, October 25. The climax of the reception to the Russians was reached last night, when the visitors were entertained in the Opera House. Madame Melba was among tho singers.
President Carnot will give an official farewell to the Russian fleet at Toulon on Friday.
