The Athletic and Melrose first fifteens tried conchwi-'m at Newtown Park last Saturday, the match resulting in a win for the Athletics by five points to nil. The game was an interesting one throughout, and some excellent play was witnessed. Wi.soa obtained a try for the Athletics, which he also converted, this being the only score during fe.-.e match. The Melrose forwards played a very go >d game indeed, blit the backs only played (airly. Campbell. Shep parfl and (forwards) were about the best, McCarthy playing a good gurae at fullbuck. The Athletics went m for more passing than is u*ual with them, and on the wliole the team showed good form. Wilson, Frnnar and Bullock wete the pick o! the backs. Goldie, Hanna and McKee playing best amongst >ho forwards. The Carlton first fifteen played a mixed team of Athletics, Melrose and Ponekes on Saturday at the Park, and won by 9 points to 4. The game was ndt a very interesting one, and owing to the diversity of colours in which the pla>ers appeared it was a moral impassibility to pick oat which men were doing best. The Petooe-Poneko match, which was to have been played at Fefeone, did not eventuate. owing to th* latter club not going our. The Wellingtons had a very poor muster at Island Bay. owing to several ol the members being engaged in rowing. The team which la to represent the Selwyn Club against Otnki Saturday found opponents in the remaining members of the club and the Yellow representatives. The combined players won by 7 points to 5, Barnett (Wellington) and Gamble (Selwyn) scored tries for the victors, Beale (Selwyn) converting Burnett's score. Earle touched down for the losers, which Sutherland converted. The Selwyn Club this season will have the services of Jtffery, late of tho Carlton Club.

During the Selwyn practice Hull, who wi>s taking part in Ihe gam*, received a severe kick, which will prevent him from playing for some time, and N, Galbraith was badly winded by J. M. Earle, while in the act of scoring his try. Tho following will represent the Poneke Club in the annual match against the E*st Christchurch Club next Saturday. Full-back, H. Davidson; three-quarters, \V, J. Wynyard, G. R. Elliaon and W. Roberts ; halves, J, Hudney and A. R"bs ; forwards, W. Wh’te, F. Young, A. Stuart, P. Cooney, S. Ponder, M. Riley, H. Lee, K. CMphant and W. Kelly; emergencies, Morrison, D, Ellison and Valentine. The team is a strong one, und should give a good account of themselves. CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION.

The balancesheet showed that the expenditure daring the year was L.-98, leaving a debit balance of 1.11. extra expense having been caused through the union representatives being sent through the Ninth and South lelan-le. The report stated that the total acnree in the interprovincial matches were—Canterbury 96, opponen's 28 pointa. Mr A. B, G. Rhodes was re-elec-ted pieaident. llr George Forbes, East Christchurch, moved that the Canterbury Rugby Union join the New Zealand Rugby Union and that notice be sent to the Otigo Union to that effect, Tbia Was seconded by Mr E. A, Mason, East Chris'church. A long di-cu-ei in followed, in which delegates from Christchurch, Sydenham, Linwood, Canterbury College, Merivalo and North Canterbury strongly opposed the proposal, which was lost by a large majority, only the East Christchurch Club’s delegates voting for it,
