THE CITY RIFLES,

The City Rifles brought their ’weeklyshooting matches Mo a dose yesterday morning. These competitions commenced on the 2nd November and have been carried on every Wednesday morning till now. The prizes offered for competition were a pair of field glasae* or binoculars to each class, to be won three times before becoming the absolute property of the winner, in addition to the customary ammunition prizes. Five of the prizes have been won outright, of which H. T. Marshall secured two, Jackson, Wickons, and Faber one each. This morning’s competition, the principal scores of which are given below, resulted in Sergeant Madeley getting a ‘ leg in ’ foi the A class prize, and Private Madden a 1 leg in ’ for the B class prize, while Private Faber won his prize out, The conditions wore —A class, seven shots at 500 and 600 yards ; B and 0, B<-V9n shots at 200 and 300 yards. The following are the scores : A Class.

•Ammunition prize*. +Fonner winners. AGGREGATE PRIZES. The leading aggregates fa each class are as follows v- A Class—Jackson, SXI; Elliot, 497 J 1 Madeley. 492 ; Luke, 469; K, Halpin, 427. B Class—Wlckens, 600; Robinson, 543 ; Madden, 514, C Class—Marshall, 580; Bunckenburgh, 513 ; B. Halpin, 506. The various rife corps parade on Friday evening necfc, and will be practised in the new form of attack as desired by Colonel Fox. On Friday rooming the Guards will bold competitions in Polhill Gully for all classes. For the handicap trophy A Class will this week fire shots each at 500 and 600 yards. B and C Classes will fire seven shots each at 200 and 300 yards on the cadet range, B Class filing for the Martini rile trophy and O Class for a trophy which has been presented by Lieutenant Porritt. To induce a larger number to be present a second prize has been allotted, given by Lieutenant McAlister, each to be won three times. The usual ammunition prizes will be given. The orderly room will be open from 8 to 9 p.m. on Thursday for the sale of ammunition. The lenior match with the City Rifles will take place on Saturday, March 4th, under the same conditions as the first. The junior match will be held on the first available Saturday after that date. A Government inspection of tho Wellington Navals was held by Lieutenant-Colonel Newell at the DriUshed last night. There were 02 of both watches on parade under command of Lieutenant Campbell, Lieutenant Bell being also present. Sergeant-Major Finn instructed the company in manual, sword-bayonet and firing exercises for some time. Marksmen of the Wellington Navals will hold a practice on the long range, Polhill Gully, on Friday morning, commencing at 5 o'clock. The district gold and silver medals will be fired for on tho Polhill Gully range on Saturday afternoon, ranges 200, 300 and 500 yards, 10 shots at each. The Wellington Rifles will fire the third match for the second aggregate prize on the cadet range, Polhill Gully, on Monday morning, commencing at 5 o’clock. The ranges will be 200 and 300 yards ; A Class, five shots at each. Martinis; B and O Classes, 10 shots at each, Sniders.
