FOOTBALL

The final heat for the military tournament, and the last game of Rugby this season, was played at Newtown Park on Saturday, between the Navals and the City Rifles, resulting in a decisive victory for the former fifteen by 20 points to I. Burns (2), McLaren (2), Beil (2), W. Parsons (2), Lowater, Griffiths, and F, France scored tries for the winners, Goll converting two of the tries, and A. Franco one. The latter pi ayer also potted a goal. Captain Patterson touched down for the losers, which Russell failed to convert. The pick of the Bluejackets were A, France, Burns, Gell and Lowater (backs), and F. France, Rabe (2), Bulford, and McLaren (forwards). Tho most prominent of the losers wore Patterson, Duff, Barry, and Macintosh (backs), and Russell, Porritt, Oliver, and McFarlano (forwarde). Mr A. Beauchamp acted as sole umpire, and Messrs J. Campbell and W, Weaver touchline judges* The tournament is thus won by the Navals. There was a rather poor muster of Association players on the Paik on Saturday afternoon, several of the team being unable to get away. Sides were arranged so that the backs played against the forwards, the latter winning by several goals. The captain will be elected onboard the Takapuna, on the way to Auckland. There will be n meeting to-night of the delegates of the Wellington, Auckland, Canterbury,. and Otago Associations in reference to the formation 6f a Now Zealand Association. Our Palmerston writes : Tho final Cup match between Feilding and Palmerston took place on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the former by 4 points to 3. The match took place on the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s ground, and the attendance was the largest ever seen on the ground, The play at the commencement was pretty equal, but a grand rush resulted in Feilding scoring a try, which was not converted. Shortly after Robertson potted a goal for Feilding. In. tho second spell Hanna scored for Palmerston, and Duncan converted the try. The remainder of the play was very exciting, but there was no further scoring on either side. THE ALLEGED OTAGO CONSPIRACY. (PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, October 4. The Rugby Union have communicated with the proprietors of the Marlborough Express demanding an apology for the publication of the charge against the Otago team, of having attempted to sell the match against Canterbury, and asking for the name of the Wellington correspondent responsible for the allegation.
