The foundation atone of the monament to the late Kev Dr Buena, coe of the founders of the settlement, was laid yesterday with considerable ceremony in the presence of a large gathering of old residents. Robert Chapman, who baa for many years been registrar of the Supreme Court, has given £IOOO tor the monument, and the foundation stone was laid by his eon, Mr C. E, Chap, man. Masterton, October 3, The Hon R. J. Seddon preeented an ilia* mioated testimonial from the residents of the West Coast to Sergeant Hannan, who was for some years stationed there. At the inquest on the Ross fire yesterday the jury found that the building had been burnt through the explosion of a lamp, but there was no evidence to show it bad not been done accidentally.
