THE CENSUS
The following are the census returns for the various provincial districts, as compared with the returns for the previous census taken in 1886
1891 1886 Auckland ... 132,512 130,379 Tarakaki ... 21,815 17,999 Hawkes Bay ... 28,301 24,56 d Wellington ... 96.289 77.536 Marlborough ... 12,835 11,113 Nelson 34,130 30,203
Westland ... 16,282 15,931 Canterbury ... 128,092 121,400 Otago 152,818 149,154 This does not include the lighthouse population on the various islands. Nearly half of the total increase of the population of the Colony, it will be seen, is claimed by Taran«ki and Wellington. This quite bear* out the RegistrafGeneral’a prediction that if there was any abnormal increase in any particular district it would be found to be on the West Coast of this island.
