VITAL STATISTICS.

The total number of births in tho Colony during the month of April was 433, as against 365 in March, an increase of 68. Tho deaths in April were 179, an increase of 3L on tho number in March. Of the tota l deaths males contributed 107, females 72. Seventy-six of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 42.46 per centofc the whole number; 59 of these were undee 1 year of ago. In Wellington the deaths are thus classified Specific febrile or zymotic diseases—Under 5 years, 1 (diarrhoea), 5 and over, 4 (3 typhoid fever and I diar:hcoa). Constitutional diseases—Under 5,2 (tubercular peretonitis and tubercular men* ingitis); over 5, 5 (cancer 1, rheumatism 1, phthsla 2, and diabetes I). Developmental diseases—Under 5, 3 (all premature birth). Local diseases—Under 5, 5 (convulsions 2, pneumonia 1, enteritis. 1, and oxzema 1; over 5, 10 (one each from meningitis, apoplexy, paralysis, insanity, heart disease, pericarditis, syncope, asthma, peritonitis, kidney disease), There was one death from violence, and one from non-specided causes. The proportion of deaths to the 1000 of population in the four cities for the year 1890, as corrected by the census returns, stands thus :—Auckland, II,ot; Wellington, 12.61; Christchurch, 12.01; and Dunedin, 14.20.
