CITY COUNCIL.

Tho ordinary fortnightly meeting of the * ity Cmncil was hold last night. Present— His Worship tho Mayor and Councillors Pethorick, Fraser, Moeller, Worth, Harris, Vogel, Anderson, Wiilestou, Smith, Parsons and Harooart.

A large amount of correspondence tinwards and outwards) was dealt with, but nothing of any importance transpired beyond an application from Messrs Bardslcy Bros., asking permission to construct soapworks on the sits at present occupied by the brewery, Adelaide road. The further con* sidoration of the matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. Tho tender of Mr Timothy Hayei was accepted for certain work in Polhill Gully, and that ol! Mr Charles Mailings for clearing a site for a reservoir at Wainui-o-mata. For tho erection of n hub In the samo locality, Mr E. Hayes’ was the lowest tender, which was accepted. The reports of the City Reserves Committee, Private Streets Committee, and Public Works Committee wero adopted, as already printed. Accounts amounting to £774 19s 4d were passed for payment. Mr De Castro, Chairman of tho Gulcher Lighting Company, attended tho Council, and made a long explanation concerning the provisions of tho Electric Lighting Bill. In answer to Councillor Harris Mr Ho Castro, said ho would not proceed with his Bill in any place where underground wires were insisted ou. Ho also objected to have a clause inserted in the Bill to purchase at a valuation pure and eimplo at the end of 21 years. He considered in town? like Wellington that overhead wires wero no drawback. Mr De Castro further stated that tho wires at present iu use were capable of lighting five times the oum her of lamps. After farther discussion the Council adjourned at 11 p.m.
