FOOTBALL

A meeting of the Management Committee o£ the Rugby Union was held at the Club Hotel last evening. There were [present Messrs Wilford (in the chair), King, MoCardell, Sim, Pownall, Collins, and the Secretary. The protest entered by the Sel* wyn Club in connection with their match for the Junior Cup with the Poneke Club was considered, but before coming to a de> cision the Committee resolved to obtain a full report from the referee as to the circum. stances of the case. With regard to the protest made by the Melrose Club against the try scored by the Wellington team in the Championship match played at Petone last Saturday, it was decided, on the motion of Mr King, seconded by Mr Collins, That as both umpires were of opinion that the try was (fairly gained before the maul took place, the interference of the spectators did not aSeot the result, and the score mast be allowed. It was also decided on the motion of Mr King, seconded by Mr Gormley, That this Committee is of opinion that the spectator who interfered is deserving of strong censure. A letter was received from the Manawatu Rugby Union asking if a representative match could be arranged with a Wellington junior team. It was decided to send a reply asking the country Union for their definition of a junior player. It was resolved on the motion of Mr MoCardle, seconded by Mr Sim, “That this Union decides that in'the two senior Championship matches to bo played next Saturday afternoon, a referee and.two touchline judges should be appointed by the respective clubs for each match.” Mr King moved that the Oriental, Pioneer, Pirate, St. Patrick’s College, and Wellington College Cinbs be struck oil the list of affiliated clubs unless thtir subscriptions are paid. This was seconded by Mr Gormley, and carried.

It was decided at the meeting of the Management Committee last night that the 'Foneke-Athletio Championship match, to take place next Saturday, should be played on No. 2 ground, Newtown, instead of Pe. tone, as previously arranged. As the two Senior Championship matches on Saturday are to be played on Newtown Park, an alteration has been made in the Junior Cup fixtures lor the same day, as follows :—The Potoue.Pioneer heat will be played at Petone instead of Epuni, and the Selwyua will meet the Navals on Epuni ground.

THE FEMALE FOOTBALL TEAM. The Auckland Star, speaking of the proposal to Bend a team of female footballers through the Colony, says ;— *• We subscribe most heartily to the doctrine that every sphere in which women are titled to take their part should be as freely open to them as to men, but there are some things for which women are constitutionally unfitted, and which are essentially unwomanly. A travelling football team composed of girls appears to us to be of this character. Moreover, making every allowance for vitiated tastes in the popular craving for amusement, we cannot conceive of cither men or women who have sisters of their own being attracted by such a spectacle, or encouraging a number of girls to forsake womanly employments for the purpose of entering upon the life of an itinerant footballer. It would also be well for the parents of girls who think of engaging in this enterprise to consider what will be their position if the enterprise proves a financial failure, which we sincerely hope and believe it will be. Have they obtained substantial guarantees that they will be returned to their homes, or are they liable to bo left stranded—homeless and penniless in some distant city ? If any respectable girls are determined to persist in this foolish enterprise we strongly advise them to make it an indispensable condition that return tickets shall be placed in their possession before leaving Auckland, so as to ensure them a safe passage back to their homes when the venture has been proved a financial failure, as it unquestionably will be if we rightly gauge the taste of the New Zealand public in the matter of amusement."
