Paris, April 30. The Journal des Debats state? that the French Ministry are in favour of a reduction of tho wheat duty for six months, and if necessary a total suppression afterwards.

A timber yard and eighteen houses at Bermondsey were burned, and a number of families rendered homeless. Mr Htnniker Heaton has improved in health.
Rome, April 30.
A large number of Anarchists have been arrested in Rome for inciting the soldiery to revolt. Washington - , May 30. Mr J. G. Blaine has declined to be nominated for tho Presidency. Disastrous fires have taken place at Chattannoga, Tennessee, and 20 acres of buildings were destroyed. J. L. Sullivan, the well-known pugilist, is a candidate for Congress for the State of Massachusetts. Ottawa, May 30. The Canadian Parliament has been opened, and Mr Peter White was elected Speaker. THE CHILIAN REVOLT. Valparaiso, April 30. The insurgents are anxious to negotiate for peace. President Bahnaceda is reported to be starting for England. A dynamite bomb was thrown into his palace, but no one was hurt. MASONIC. London, April 30. H.R.H. the Prince of Wales has again been installed as Grand Master of tho English Masons, and has appointed Earl Latham pro - Grand Master, and Earl Mount-Edgeoumbe Deputy.

The Bank of England returns, published to-day, show the total reserve in notes and bullion to be L 12,920,000, The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 34.80.
Consols, 95|. Three months’ bills are at 3§ per cent. New Zealand 4 per cent inscribed stock, 103 ; 3i per cent do, 90. New Zealand longberried wheat, 455, market weaker ; New Zealand wheat on passage, 44s 6d ; barley, 31s ; oats, 26s 6d ; beans, 375.
Hemp—Wellington fair quality averages L2O 15s. Canterbury lamb, 4|d ; mutton unchanged. Beef Forequarters, 3|d ; hindquarters, 4Jd. The bulk of the South Australian wheat offered for sale was bought in.. Victorian wheat, 44s 3d, restricted, Sugar Best German beet, 13s 6d, steady ; Java, 15s. No. 1 best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in Clyde, 45s 3d.
