A SURPLUS OF £143,983 15a Gi>,
Tho revenue and expenditure for the past financial have been male up, and show the following results :—Tho actual receipts for tho year in the “ ordinary revenue account '* exceeded the expenditure by £107*390 IGs 2d, When the £36,363 19s 4d brought forward from i 839*00 is added, the surplus ol tho past year amounto to £143,905 Iss ca. , , 'I ho land fund account shows a surplus for the year of £4s 162, and after wiping cut tho deficit of £45,716 15a of tho previous year, a net surplus of £2445 5* remains. In the ordinary revenue the receipt?, umler every beading except that cf depasturing license.*, exceeded the estimate. The depasturing licenses were £l7lß iu arrear. The excesses in these receipts wero 1 8 follow Customs, £74,707; stamps,£l9,loo; property tax, £2348; beer duty, £4072; railways, £43,322 ; registration, £2105; marine, £BB4 • and miscellaneous, £9004. Aa to the Land Fund receipts, tho sales for cash were £CB,7oS in excess of the estimate, and the sales on deferred payments £IOBB in orroar.
The expenditure was £49,COD —under all beads—above tbo estimate, the most noticeable increase being iu the item '* under special Acts,’’ where tho sum of £19,140 practically represents the cos.t of the second session of Parliament ; in the subsidies, £14,659 above the estimates (all subsidies duo having been paid at the end of tho year instead of being allowed to stand over as a liability, as is often the case) ; and for working railways, £27,892 extra having been spent by the Commissioners. The unauthorised expenditure was as follows :—£14,712 on defence, £ll,lOO on the Colonial Treasurers Department, and £10,410 upon services nob provided for.
