New York advices to hand per the mail state that tonnage is in good supply, and vessels are obtainable for the colonial trade at very low prices. From the depressed condition of the market for vessels, it is believed lower rates will bo quoted in the immediate future, as these must decline with the lower cost of vessels. The steam traffic to the Australian from New York is being prosecuted vigorously by our American friends, for Messrs Peabody and Co. have laid on tho ss Henley, of 2243 tons, for Sydney. She is to carry for the New South Wales Government, but will likely have room for a few hundred tons of general merchandise. The ss Strathdon, 2643 tons, has been chartered to follow the Henley in June. She will also take railway stock, and will have space for a limited amount of outside cargo. COLONIAL OBSERVATORY.
