THE NATIVE LANE LAWS COMMISSION.
fPKK PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Uawkra, April 24. The Native Lard Laws Commissioners visited To Whitiet PariLaka yesterday. In the course of conversation with To Wbid aud tbo cb'efs, Mr Lees exp'ained that the appointment of tbe Commission was tbo outcome of a desire ou the part of tho Government and Parliament to remedy tha grievances complained of by the Maoris generally with respect to their lands, and this, therefore, was specially a favourable opportunity of making their voices heard. Te Whitisaid the Maori chiefs, year after year, had boeu petitioning Parliament, but nothing seemed to be done
Mr Rees rejoined that Parliament, con* vinced by those petitions that something required to be done, had appointed the Commission to make full enquiry. Circulars in Maori, setting oat the portion of the evidence given by influential chiefs, together with tbe explanatory state* ment of the Commissioners, were then distributed. Te Whitt afterwards entertained tho Commission and staff at tea.
