THE OPERA HOUSE.
MISS JENNIE LEE AS "JO.”
The large and enthusiastic audience at the Opera House on Saturday night was iudioa. live that Mias Jennie Lee, in her worldfamed character of "Jo,’’ is ns popular as ever with Wellington theatre goers. The plot of Mr Burnett's dramatisation of Uioken’s “ Bleak House-’’ is too well-known to need a description, audit is scarcely necessary to say that Miss Jennie Lee in the principal character cl the piece, “Jo,” displays the highest artiotio merit, rendering her impersonation of the poor half-starved waif with a fidelity only possible at the hands of a first-class artiste, who has studied the living model as existing in the slums of the world’s metro, polis. Miss Lea is supported by a strong company, who render their several parts both conscientiously and well. Mrs Bolton as Lady Dedlock played a difficult and thankless part well, while Mies Ada Lee made a decided hit as Mademoiselle Hortense. Miss May Hill and Mias Carrie Fischer gave excellent interpretations of the characters of “Esther” and “ Guster" respectively. As Inspector Bucket, Mr Burnett was certainly a success, though his conception of this well-known part is different from any others we have previously Been, Tulkinghorn, the family solicitor, a difficult character, was capably treated by Mr G. P. Carey, who exhibited some very finished noting. Mr H. Marechell, and Mr Smith, as “Sir Leicester Deblock ’’ and “Snagsby,” were good, while Mr Catnbourn as “Chadband,” did every justice to his part, “Guppy” was in the hands of Mr E. Lester, who thoroughly amused the audieuce by his humourous acting. At the intervals between the first and second acts, the principals were called before the curtain, and loudly applauded. This evening, the company appear again iu the same attractive programme.
