PALMERSTON NORTH.

(PROM OTJK OWN CORRESPONDENT.) December 12, It was my good fortune to be in Fielding on Wednesday last on the occasion of a most enjoyable concert given by the mem* bers of the Manawatu and Bangitikei Musical Union, nodes the di-eotion and leadership of our townsman, Mr Isherwood. It wau found necessary to modify slightly the programme as originally announced, and the concert opened with the overture “ Ccironne d’or,” the other overtures played being those to “Zampa,’' “Cenerentola,” and “Tancredi," all of which, but more especially the last named going remarkably well. Miss Kitchen (from Wanganui) sang “ Dear Heart” in a manner which charmed her audience, and was equally effective in ” Good • bye ” for which as for the first song, she received an encore. Mr Henderson sang **Tbe Storm Fiend” and " Friar of Orders Gray,” the first-named being especially well sung. Miss Mowlem sang “ Fiddle and I," (violin obbligato), and received a well-merited encore. A trio (ocarina, violin, and piano) was somewhat of a novelty, but went exceedingly well, Mr Pitany producing wonderfully harmonious tones from a very unpromising-looking instrument, something between a flower-pot and a kidney potato. Mr Montagu gave two oomto songs with good effect. That Mr Isherwood, in De Beriot’e No. 1 Concerto, would give an exposition snob as most have delighted everyone goes without saying. This piece was accompanied by the orchestra, under the conductorsbip of Mr South, of Marton, and tbs effect was snob as I can hardly find words to express. Mr Isherwood, second violin solo, a selection from " William Tell,” accompanied by Mr Esam, went equally well. Throughout the concert the members, one and all, carried out their several parts with every care, and considering the very short time the Society has been in existence, with great credit to themselves and to the conductor, Mr South, whose musioal capabilities are well-known and thoroughly appreciated throughou t the district. Mrs Ksam’s accompaniments were worthy of the highest praise, and 1 am told the Society is much indebted to that lady for her support in many ways. The financial results were satisfactory, bat I think a district like that of Feildiog might well on such an occasion have rewarded the Society’s efforts with a bumper bouse. The Association will, I believe, by special invitation shortly appear in Bulls and Marten, May I ask you to correct an error in the report of the opening of the new Boman Catholic Church of St Patrick. The lady who took part in the choir and who sang so effectively was Mrs Claude Pascal, and not Mrs Pascoe *3 stated. The partial eclipse of the sun was very distinctly visible here this afternoon, nearly two-thirds of the disc being obscured.
