The arrival of the White Star liner Teutonic, and of the Inman steamship City of New York, which left New York on September 17, the former 20 minute- 1 after her rival, was anxiously looked for at Queenstown on September 23, it being fully expected that rapid passages would be made. At 1.9 |pm the City of New York arrived off Roches Point, having accomplished the voyage In 5 days 23 hours 14 minutes. This is her best Eastern passage. The Teutonic, which travelled by a route 21 miles longer, arrived 20 minutes later. There was brisk betting on the result between the passengers on board. The weather on the Atlantic was very fine, and the only thing that impeded their progress was the fog which prevailed on September 2), anl necessitated the slowing down of the City of New York's engines for three hours. The Teutonic kept the other vessel in view until September 19, Fog was experienced the next day, but on September 21 those on board the City of New York saw the White Star liner again, following them about the same distance behind as when they started from Sandy Hook. From this time they never lost sight of each other. The following are abstracts from their respective logs ; —City of New York —lßlh, 456 miles; 19th, 433 miles ; 20ch, 431 miles; 21st, 43.0 miles ; 22nd, 474 miles; 23rd, 491 miles ; total, 2773 miles. Teutonic—lßth, 490 miles; 19th, 450 miles; 20th, 460 miles; 21st, 441 miles ; 22nd, 454 ini’es; 23rd, 493 miles; total, 2794 mi’ea.
