GLADSTONE ON PROTECTION. Mr Gladstone, in presenting Ihe Cohden Club address to Mr Thomas Potter, admitted that Freetrade was undergoing a period of danger, and that its doctrines had lost much ground during the past quarter of a century, owing to a large extent to European militarism. Tho American and Colonial action in excluding the Chinese was Protection pure and simple. It was the virtues and not the vices of Chinese that were dreaded.
