R. B. Lush, one of the New Zealand athletic team to compete in the Sydney championship, left for Sydney to-day, A second shipment of frozen fish from this Colony to New South Wales was made today. The consignment was abont 20 tons, and about half of it is from Auckland.
The Shipwrights’ Protection Society have made an alteration in their rules so as to provide that no fewer than four members of the society shall be engaged in the docking of a vessel.
The Railway Commissioners have declined an application from Mr Canning! am. an agent at Onehunga, that they should refund certain charges made by him during the period when a toll was levied on the (carts conveying goods to the Onehnnga wharf. The Auckland Catholic Literary Society have passed a vote of condolence with Dr King on the death of Mrs King, who died at Wellington on Friday. Dunedin, May 13.
A meeting of creditors was held to-day in the estate of an old settler, a grocer, whose estate the Official Assignee estimates is worth 40s in the pound. The oircamstancss under wbioh the debtor was advised by his solicitor and friends to file arose out of complications with regard to - certain land trans actions. The land in question had been bought by the debtor, who built cottages on it, and transferred the lease to a purchaser. Several times the property changed hands, and the present tenant in possession being unable to pay the ground rent, a demand was made on the original lessee, who, believing he could.not in justice to his other creditors pay it, filed. The amount of claim is £SOO. The Art Gallery Committee have resolved to purchase a third picture, entitled "Kirkwall, Orkney.” The subscriptions now amount to close upon £SOO. Two interesting cases will be heard in the Supreme Court next month. One is an action for divorce, the petitioner being the daughter of a well-known citizen. The parties, it is stated, have only been married a few months. In the other action £3OO isdaimed for a broach of promise of marriage and seduction. The defendant is a settler at Gore, where the plaintiff was employed as a milliner. At a meeting of the Chamber of .Mines tonight Mr James Allen, M.H.R., was elected president. ■ The following gentlemen were alected :—Vice-Presidents—Messrs A. J. Cad man, M.H.R. (Coromandel), J. A. Mollwraith (Christchurch), J. G. Ward (Invercargill), T. G. Walters (Westport), V. Pyke, M.H.R, and W. L. Simpson (Duncoin). ’ A council of 18 members was also appointed. Nelson, May 13. A considerable quantity of hops are being shipped hence.
