FOOTBALL.

A practice match between the first fifteens of the Poueke and Athletic Cluhs was played at Newtown Park on Saturday, the [former winning by three tries to nil. Beck, Ellison, and Lee scored tries for the winners. The victors were poorly represented in the back division. Beck, Reich, and Stuart were conspicuous amongst the forwards, and Lee and Ellison amongst the backs. On the Athletic side, Howard, Johnson, and Murphy (forwards), and Galloway, Smith, and Fraser (backs) played best. A scratch match was played at Newtown Park between the Union and St Patrick’s College first fifteens, the latter winning by a goal to two tries. For the winners Timmins scored a try, which he converted, and on the Union side Dean and Mahoney each secured a try. The result was rather a surprise, as the College team is very weak this season. The Wellington Rovers and Queen’s Park Football Clubs had a practice game at the Melrose naddock on Saturday. T. Shields (Captain) and E. Forrest (Vice) picked sides, the former winning by five goals to three. J. Squires got three and Brunton and Kean one goal each for the winners, and Wilson, Cutler, and Henderson one each for the losers. The Pitone first and Poneke second fifteens tried conclusions at the former’s ground on Saturday, the Ponekes winning after a good game by 4 points to nil. Neither side played with their fall strength. For the winners Hood and J. Clarke scored one try each, and Hood kicked a goal from Clarke’s try. Some very good form was shown on both sides considering it was the the first match for both teams. A match was played at the Hobson street paddock on Saturday afternoon between the Carlton and Selwyn first fifteens, and was won by the Selwyns by 5 points to 1. The game was very fast. A match was played on Saturday afternoon between teams from the Pioneer and Wellington College Clubs, and resulted in a draw—3 points to 3. Murray, for the Pioneers, secured a mark, from which Hall kicked a goal, and for the College Thompson got a try, from which Bee placed a goal. A meeting of the junior members of the Athletic Football Club was held at the Occidental Hotel on Saturday night. Mr W. Seutt was elected captain, and Mr F. L. Seager secretary. Mr M.
