WELLINGTON AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.

SECOND SPOUTS’ MEETING.

The second athletic meeting of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club was held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Favoured by beautiful weather, the Club provided for about five hundred visitors an excellent afternoon’s amusement. Tbe programme was made up of the usual walking, running, bicycling, and jumping competitions, and in most oases the contests were exceedingly keen. The Ladies’ Bracelet, 440yds, fell to J. M. King, who, though be started from scratch, had no difficulty in beating a field of about ten. Forty or fifty yards from home, however, King pushed Porritt aside in order to get past him, and a protest has been entered by the latter on the ground of jostling. King could have won in any case, but whether or not he ought to have gone round Porritt is what the Committee will have to decide. The mile and half-mile handicaps were won rather easily by E. E. Boddington, and the 250 yards handicap fell to Rosa Gore, King running a good second. Both bicycle races were well contested. Hey wood proved invincible in the 200 yards start in the mile race ; but in the two-mile event Newton, the scratch man, showed a great deal too much speed for the others, and won easily. The hurdle race wad won by H. W. Batger, as usual, and with the usual ease. The other events were generally well contested. Tbe Club’s officers performed their various and arduous functions in an unexceptionable manner, the Secretary (Mr L. Tripp), Assistant-Secretary (Mr H. McCardell), and Treasurer (Mr D. H. McKinnon), being deserving of special mention for their energy and good management. During the afternoon first-class music was supplied by Mr Jenkins’ band.
