IioNDOK, May 21. The Bill introduced in the House of liorde by the Earl of Meath to qualify women for sitting as members of County Councils has been rejected by a large majority. General Maitland, Director-General of the Ordnance Department at Woolwich, has been compelled to resign his position, and also his membership of the Army and Navy Club. It is alleged that he was found guilty of immorality of a depraved character. Princess Beatrice has been confined of a son.
The quotation of the Tasmanian loan by the Stock Exchange has been deferred.
The wife of Phil Eobinson, the war correspondent, who has recently returned from Australia, is suing for a divorce. She alleges that her husband forced her to swallow a quantity of morphia, which produced insanity, and then had her interned in a lunatic asylum.

Flour —New Zealand stone made, 1.10 10s to Lll; roller made, Lll 5s to Lll 15a, The oat market is also glutted —Heavy feed, 2a 9d to 3a 2d; seed, 3a 5d There is a plentiful supply of maize at 2a 9d to 3a 2d, and the market is declining. Barley—Cape, 3s ; tpne of the market is dull. There is a steady demand for bran at la Id. Pollard, la 2d to la 2|d. Potatoes — New Zealand, L 4 3 Os; Tasmanian, IA 17a 6d ; Circular Heads, L 5 2s 6d. New Zealand onions (best) are scarce, Ll 5 to Ll 6. Batter—Market glutted with inferior qualities only ; best quality is saleable ; separator made, Is to Is Id; dairy made, 8d to lOd. Cheese market is dull, and there is a plentiful supply ; local manufacture, 6d to 7-2-d; New Zealand, 7d to 7£d. Bacon is scarce at lOd. Hams in demand at Il£d to Is. Melbourne, May 22.
Wheat market strong ; prices range up to 5s Bd. Flour—Stone made, Lll 10s; roller brands, Ll2, with upward tendency. Oats, improved, 3s 10£d. Barley—Feed, 3s 7d; malt ing, 5s 6d. Maize, 4s 4d to 4s 4£-d. Bran, Is 3.1. The police have received a letter signed “ Jack the Kipper,’’ apprising them of his arrival in Australia, and announcing his intention to enter upon a career of crime here similar to his performances ia London and the West Indies. The writer concludes by telling them to catch him if they can. The police believe the letter to be a lions, but precautionary measures have been taken in view of possibilities.

Tbe New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cable message from their London office, dated 21st instant“ Wool. —Market firm. The Antwerp sales are brisk. New Zealand hemp—Market easier. Frozen Meat—Mutton, market easier. Canterbury is worth 4-fd, and Wellington 4fd per lb. Lamb—Market quiet. Canterbury is worth sfd pet lb. Beef—Market inactive. Hind-quar-ters are worth 4d, and forequarters Sfd per lb.”
