The Marquis of Salisbury addressed a great meeting of the Primrose League at Her Majesty’s Theatre last night. In the course of his speech, the Premier said the most pemarkable political phenomenon of the present time was the manner in which the Home counties were becoming Tory in proportion to the lowering of the suffrage. The victory was steadily inclining to the loyalist party in Ireland.

At a meeting of Irish peers, a motion approving the abolition of the office of Viceroy of Ireland was passed.

Mr William O’Brien, M.P., was examined before The Times-Parnell Commiesion to-day. In the course of his examination he stated that the League had averted famine and civil war in Ireland, and declared that Michael Davitt had vehemently denounced the outrages committed in County Mayo; but. said that boycotting was the only weapon in the hands of the people, and that he was persuaded that unconstitutional action would be madness. He had undertaken to conduct the United Ireland cause constitutionally. STRIKE OF MASONS. Berlin, May 20. Mr Wm. O’Brien, who is bringing an action for libel against the Marquis of Salisbury in consequence of the statements made by the Premier during his speech at Watford, in March last, lays the damages at LIO,OOO. An application will bo ipade for a change of venue to Manchester.

Judgment in the case of Yagliano Brothers has been affirmed by-a full Court. [Note. —In November last Yagliano Brothers, merchants, of Old Broad-street, London, recovered L 71,000 from the Bank of England. The action rose out of the Geyka frauds in 1887. Geykn, who was a clerk in the bank, forged bills on the firm for the amount mentioned, and was sentenced to 10 years’ - imprisonment'for fraud.

Joe Thompson, the well known Australian bookmaker, at present visiting England, has written to Slavin, the Australian pugilist, advising him to pay a professional visit to England.
