Peter Birley, a young man who had been drinking, took a doae of “ Rough on Rata ” yesterday afternoon. He was removed to the Hospital, and is recovering. A young woman named Mary Lovett was arrested before 1 o’clock this morning on the Queen-street Wharf on a charge of smuggling goods ashore from the steamer Taiyuan. She was found to be carrying 25 yards of silk. Alex. McArthur, an engineer on the steamer, stateshehad promised to give her the silk, but she took it ashore without hia permission, She was charged at the Resident Magistrate’s Court with larceny and breach of the Customs Act, and on the latter charge was fined 255, the value of the silk, and 6s 3d duty, and costs. Alex. McArthur, the engineer, was fined £9 15s for dealing in nn-enstomed goods, and ordered to pay 6b 3d duty and costs. Mr McArthur withdrew the charge of larceny preferred against the woman. At Onehunga yesterday, Mr Clendon, R,M >( sat, as a Commissioner, to take evidence as to the future control and maintenance of the Mangere Bridge. Representatives of the local bodies concerned gave evidonee, and Sir G. M. O’Rorke and Mr F. Lawry, M.H.R., addressed the Court. The evidence will be forwarded to the Government. The local bodies wish the Govern, ment to grant an endowment from Crown Lands to maintain the bridge.
