THE VISIT OF DR HANNAY AND MR LEE.
The members of the Congregational denomination held a tea meeting at the Bowen, street Schoolroom' Monday night to celebrate the advent in Wellington of the Rev Dr Hannay and Mr Henry Lee. There was a capital attendance, and it is needless to say full justice was done to the supply of good things which were prov.ded. After tea an adjournment was made to the church, and several addresses were delivered, the Rev Dr West presiding. Several clergymen of various denominations were amongst the visitors. In the church the following resolution was moved by the Rev W. J. Habens, seconded by the Rev E, HampdenCook (Thames), and carried unanimously “ That this meeting acknowledges with sincere thankfulness the affectionate regard entertained by the Congregational Churches of the Mother Country for the younger churches of the same order in the new world of the Southern Hemisphere, especially as that regard is exhibited in the mission of the Rev Dr Hannay and Mr Lee j who, chosen for the mission because they are held in honour, are welcome here not less for their own sake than on account of the message of fraternal greeting of which they are the bearers, and who are hereby requested to convey to the Congregational Union of England and Wales, and to the Colonial Missionary Society, an expression of the recipocal affection of the 'Congregational Churches of the Wellington District ; and further, that this meeting devoutly commends these honoured servants of Christ to the divine protection and favour’, praying that such grace may rest upon them as is needful for the performance of the Apostolic work that has been entrusted to them, and that when by their means the churches in these lands have been refreshed and strengthened they may be conducted in health and safety to their homes, and be longed' spared to devote the fruits of their enlarged experience to the service of our common Lord and of his people.” The Rev Dr Hannay and Mr Lee replied to the resolution at considerable length, thanking their co-religionists in Wellington heartily for the warm and cordial reception which they had extended to them. A resolution as follows, proposed by the Rev W. Powell (Courtenay-place) and seconded by Mr W. West Knowles, was also carried unanimously“ That the best thanks of this meeting are due, and are hereby presented, to the Rev Dr Hannay and Mr Lee for their kindness in visiting us, and for the addresses they have delivered.” Throughout the evening appropriate hymns were sung by the choir, Mrs Holdaworth presiding’ at the harmonium. With reference to the distinguished visitors, who have been entertained by the Congregational body, it might be mentioned that Mr Lee, who is a a hale old gentleman of 70 years, is the head of a large cotton-spinning firm in Manchester, which has in its employ 5000 hands. Dr Hannay is well known in England in the Congregational Church by his zeal and ability. -
