At the meeting between the Emperors yesterday, the Russian and German men-of-war, which were all gaily decorated, met off Cronstadt, and formed into double line. The Imperial yachts then steamed between the lines, the war vessels firing salutes. The Emperor William went on board the Czar’s yacht Alexandra. Here he was warmly received, and, the Emperors embracing, kissed each other. They then proceeded to Peterhoff, where the Czarina was in waiting to meet the Emperor William. The whole of the proceedings were successfully carried out, and the meeting is described as a brilliant pageant. London, July 19.
The total quantity of wheat-flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1.910.000 quarters ; for the Continent, 318.000 quarters. The weekly returns of the Bank of England, published to-day, show that the total reserve in notes and bullion is L 12,631,000, The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 39J- per cent. July 20.
It is reported that the Right Rev Dr Stubbs is to bo translated to the See of Oxford, and that the Right Rev Dr Barry, of Sydney, will succeed to the Bishopric of Chester. The celebration of the ter-centenary of the Spanish Armada took place at Plymouth yesterday. The fleets did not participate owing to the man oeuvres at Spithead and Portland having commenced. In the House of Commons, Mr Dabouchere and Sir J. McKenna, member for Monaghan S., tabled notices of motion for the rejection of the Bill appointing a commission to inquire into The Times’ charges against Mr Parnell. Berlin, July 20. The meeting between B Prince Bismarck, Oonnt Kalnoky and Signor Crispi is fixed for a date toward the end of August. Sydney, July 21. The House sat continuously for 36 hours discussing the Estimates, which, however, passed at an early hour this morning. Sixty Chinese have been rendered homeless by the fire which occurred in the suburb of Waterloo last evening. Arrived —Barques Loongana, from Monganui, and Rose M., from Mercury Bay, Melbourne, July 21. Sir Graham Berry has been instructed to use his influence to obtain the name of Admiral .Field's authority for tho statement recently made in the House of Commons that any number of members in the Victorian Assembly could be bribed. Adelaide, July 21. Replying to a deputation, the Premier promised to amend the Licensing Act next session in the direction of local option, provided that compensation to publicans will be agreed to. At the Marine Board inquiry into the loss of the ship Star of Greece, the Court delivered judgment to the effect that the evidence showed a manifest want of skill in navigation on the part of the master, resulting in tho wreck. No blame was attributed to the mate.
