The Onehnnga ironworks re-commence active operations to day. Arrangements have been made with Mr Hughes, of Sydney, who baa taken over the works. It is his intention to carry on the smelting of iron sand, a work in which ho has had a good deal of -experience elsewhere. Mr Hughes has brought with him from Australia a dozen workmen, who are proficient in the industry. > About 2 this morning Constable Hansen discovered the Post Office building to be on fire at the Fort-street front. Hearing a crackling noise from the corner of the street, he roused the caretaker, and found that the fire had originated in a wooden box, into which ashes had been pat, communicating to the door. The flames were promptly suppressed. But for the accidental discovery, the whole building might have been destroyed. Blenheim, August 22. The Marlborough branch of the Educational Institute met on Saturday, and condemned the imputation passed by Bishop NTevill upon the morality of girls attending the State schools. The Anal meet of the Marlborongh Hunt Club took place on Saturday and resulted in the largest attendance of the whole season, and some splendid jumping, The club has arranged with Mr Welle. - , the owner of a pack of hounds, who came here from Nelson, to hunt three months next year. A Hunt Club steeplechase meeting is likely to reault. Taukanga, August 22. On Saturday night .a boy named Turnbnll iell off the Town Wharf, and was-bsing carried down by the ebb tide when one of the B.s. Omapere’s crew, named Smith, jumped in and pluckily rescued him. James' Dowell, aged 13, a son of Colonel Dowell, met with an accident on Saturday, which proved fatal. The horse he was riding bolted and fell, throwing Dowell, who alighted on his head, and died a few hours after from fracture of the skull. Cheistchuech, August 22. A telegram received by the New Zealand Shipping Company' states that the ship Wairoa has sailed for Lyttelton. The Waikato is loading for Auckland, and the Waimate for Wellington.
