• There ar© 500 places of religions worship in New York, with 400,000 church sittings representing 23 denominations. The official list issued by the Deutsches Handelsarchiv of the imports from Germany into the Cameroon region of West Africa is highly suggestive. The imports were : 1,524,028 litres of rum, 37,800 bottles of gin, 1588 old muskets, and 1000 cartridges. Next to these requisites for intoxication and bloodshed were 1,112,000 kilograms of sugar, 56,039 kilograms of tobacco, and, finally, 398,200 yards of cloth.
