NATIVE DEPARTMENT RETRENCHMENT.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I am sorry to find that, notwithstanding my remonstrance, Mr Vickers still persists in attacking me~through the. columns of your paper. He has very' deftly handled my statement about .his services, but totally ignores my assertion that he was distinctly informed he must retire f.om the Native Department in May, 1885, twelve months before my employment. I ask him now, is this true ; and if it is, I leave the public to judge his friendly action toward me, and the truth of his assertion. lam glad that on this occasion' Mr Vickers has spared ! hia “ old friends,” and gone for the “ stranger.” Pity he did not do so sooner, before poor “ Stranger ’’ thought he'had found a confidential friend in him. “ For if I fawn on men and hug them hard, and after scandal them, then“ hold me dangerous.” Thanking you, Sir, for your courtesy in publishing my last letter, I am, &c., Henry D. O’Oallaghan/ ■ Tiuakori-road, 13th August.
