Acceptances for .the Telegraph Stakes, Hurdle Handicap, Stewards’ Handicap, Local Handicap, and Wellington Two-year-old Stakes, to be run at the Wellington Racing Clnb’s summer meeting, oloae at 9 p-m. to-day.
WAIRARAPA J.C. RACES. Tha second day’s racing of the Wairarapa Jockey Club was held on Saturday at Greytown. The following are the winners of the chief events : —Flying Handicap, Mr Tancred’s Princess Royal; Hurdles, Mr Weston’s Aroha; Jockey Club Handicap, Mr Turner’s Charmer; Novel Race, Mr Tancred’s Normanby; District Produce Stakes, Mr Tancred’a Forester. About £2200 passed through the totalisator during the two days. TAKAPUNA RACES. ROWDY PROCEEDINGS. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION'.) Auckland, January 29, The Summer Meeting of the Takapnna Jockey Club was held to-day, there being a large attendance. Following are the results: -Selling Steeplechase—Rob Roy, 1; Rowdy, 2 ; Quilp, 3. Selling Race— Capella, I : The Cat, 2; Sir Bedivero, 3. Maiden Plate-Wat Tyler, 1; Rosey, 2; Luna, 3. Handicap Hurdles—Magnesia, 1 ; Pipi, 2 j Caro], 3. Kawenata fell. Takapnna Cup Handicap, of 125 sovs—Scot Free, X ; Wapiti, 2; Friendship, 3. Steeplechase— Falcon, 1; Zip, 2; Tiger, 3. Anniversary Handicap—Jessie, 1; Oateaby, 2 ; Friendship,. 3. The start in this race was disputed. There was a great disturbance, and the starter, Mr Owen McGee, was under police proteotion, the people L demanding back their money ou the totalisator. Lathe. Further particulars re the disturbance at the. Takapnna races over the Anniversary Handicap show that the start was a miserable one, for Jessie, getting several lengths in front of everything else, was never caught from start to finish, winning by a length and a half, Catesby second. Friendship third. Great confusion ensued at the close of the race. The Judge declined to give his decision for the totalisator to pay out, and there were cries from the assemblage, some 3,000, “No start! No start!” Ewan Alison, alleged to bo tha owner of Jessie, and racing under the style of “ B Thompson,” went up to the starter, Owen McGee, and asked whether it was a start.; Mr McGee replied in the affirmative. It transpired that Alison had either one or two tickets on the horse, and the trainer one, the fourth being held by some people on shares. As these were the only tickets on Jessie the dividend was £l6l. Owing to the conduct of the mob the police surrounded Mr McGee and .sot him into the weighingroom,. and thence to the stowards’-room. On being questioned J Mr McGee declared that it was a start. A protest was entered by the owner of Catesby on the ground that the start was a false one. The Stewards decided to have the race run over again, which was done- The owner of Jessie declined to run his mare, and the race resulted thus— Catesby, 1; Friendship, 2; Reproach, 3. Tne totalisator then paid oat a dividend of 41s. Daring the mllce Constable Hansen was out on the forehead, and MountedConstable Gillies attempted to bo dragged from his horse. One man was arrested, but was subsequently released to be proceeded against by summons. It is reported that Mr Alison will take legal proceedings against the Club for the stakes, £3O, and also for the totalisator ticket money. It was feared at. one timet daring the disturbance that the mob would smash the grandstand or totalisator.
