In consequence of continuous and heavy rain, the rivers are rising very rapidly, and communication is interrupted at the Clarence and Eich-. mond Hirers, which have been heavily' flooded. The Ttmon Company’s E.RI.S. Zealandia, which left Sydney yesterday afternoon for Auckland, ran aground in the harbor in the vicinity of the roots known as the Sow and Pigs. The vessel was, however, got off at 6.30 in the evening, without any damage being done, and proceeded on her voyage. Melbourne, January 27. Mr John Douglas, High Commissioner for New Guinea, who is now in the city, is conferring With Mr Gillies with'regard to the affairs of that island. (Per s.s. Wairarapa at Auckland.) (united press association.) Sydney, January 20. A lock-out bag occurred amongst the Lambton miners, of whom several hundred are thrown out of employment. There is great excitement in the district. In oonneotion with the strike at the Iliawarra mines, a scrimmage took place between the Mount Pleasant blacklegs , and the miners out on strike, Kevolvers were drawn, but no shots fired. The managers seem determined to gain their point. Sir Alfred Steven’s Divorce Bill is again to be introduced in the Assembly. The Rev Mr Foster, late of Timaru, has been publicly welcomed as the head pastor of the Congregational Church at Bathurst. Brisbane, January 20. Mr Dickson, Colonial Treasurer, will bo Acting Colonial Secretary daring the absence of Sir S. W. Griffiths. The barque George E. Crowe, destroyed by fire, was only partially insured.
