New Zealand Times Ofhce. Wednesday Evening, ' During the past four weeks the folio ving vessels have brought cargoes to Wellington from ports other than Australian or New Zealand :—S.S. Tongariro from London, via Port Chalmers ; ship Timaru, from London; barque Cormorant, from Liverpool, and a.s. Arawa, from London, via Port Chalmers. Business has been quiet ever since the date of our last summary, out there is a belief that as Christmas approaches things will become brisker than they have been for many months. _ The changes in tho prices of commodities within the four weeks have not been great. There is little to report concerning the market for wine, beer and spirits, which remains in its usual state at this season. In ale, Griffin’s sparkling is quoted at lls for quarts, and 7s for pints ; Reid’s Dog’s Head at lls fid to lls 9d, for quarts, and 7a 6d to 7s 9d, for _ pints. Stout sells at similar rates according to brand, but the demand in summer is some vhat slack. Hennessy’s three-star brandy sells at 48s to 495, and one-star at 33s 9d; Denis Mounie ia quoted at 31s fid in case and 10s in bulk. For whiskey the following are quotations :—Walker's Kilmarnock, 20a ; Teacher’s, 22s fid; Usher’s, 22s fid; Danville, 17s GJ. Lemon Hart’s rum in case brings 18s fid to 21s, according to quality; Red Heart, 245; Lemon Hart’s (bulk), 3s 7d. There has been a drop in the price of sugar, and tha tendency appears still to be toward a fall. The following are tha Auckland Company's prices in Auckland No. 1, L23jper ton; No. 2, L 2 4; and No. 3, LlB. In Wellington the quotations are—No, 1, L 27; No; 2, L 25; and No, 3, L2O. China A sugar is quoted trom L 25 sstoL26; and American at L 27. Coarse silt is in good supply, and is quoted from L2 10s for Liverpool, and L 3 5s for London. Fine salt is still very scarce. By the barque Cormorant, from Liverpool, 50 tons were received, and some purchase have been made in other parts of the Colony, but the amount received has not been sufficiently large to affect the price, which remains at from L 4 10s per ton. A small quantity is also expected by the ship Turakina, now due from London. Currants are quoted at from 5d 'to 5Jd, elemos at (id to GM, sultana* fid to 6|d. Tinned salmon are very scarce, and the price responds to the firm state of the market in New York and S(in Francisco, Quotations are 8s to 8s fid, according to brand. For the Star brand of lobsters 9s fid is the quotation, • and for other brands 8s 9d to 9s. Candles are still overstocked and exceedingly cheap, colonial Belling as low as 4d. Soda crystals are quoted at L 6 per ton. Kerosene is in heavy stock, with little demand, owing to t)ie long days. It is selling at low rates from stpre. Best Japan rice is quoted at from L2O to L2O 10s per ton. Flour has been firm lately at LIJ. 10a per ton for best brands, but dairy produce and old potatoes have been very low.
