(Received December I, 10.30 p.m.) 'Melbotjene, December 1. The Union Company’s a.s. Tarawera arrived this morning. The.manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand reports as follows of the local market:—Wheat is quiet at 4s lOd to 4s lid; barley, slow of sale, 3s 9d to 4s 3d. New Zealand oats (feed sorts) show no improvement, 9s 8d to 9s lid. There is no material change in New Zealand oats (milling sorts); if anything slightly weaker, 2s 7d to 3s. New Zealand oats (under bond), 2s Id to 2s 2d. Sydney, December 1.
The Union Company’s R.M S Alameda sailed to-day for Auckland, en route for San Francisco. . (Received December 2, X a.m.) Sidney, December 1.
Messrs Burns, Phillips, and Co., agents for the British India Steam Navigation Company, have made an offer for the purchase of the entire fleet and the wharves of the A.S.N. Company, It is stated that the amount offered is £1,000,000. In connection with the recent land frauds,. Olliver has made a statement exonerating Hunt. Mr Sapsford, the city architect, died to-day. An inquest was held to-day on the body of Fred. Berendt, who died from the effects of eating sandwiches which had been poisoned for the purpose of killing rats. An open verdict was returned. The death is announced of Mr John Tait, the well-known sportsman. Melbourne, December 1.

The washing at Teetulpa has not given very favorable results. The diggers refuse to give information as to their earnings, but private advices report that very rich yields are being obtained.
Reports of the South Australian wheat crop are very favorable, and an increased estimate is formed of the yield.
