The Austrian Ministry ot Agriculture, to which Is attached tbs mining department, publishes the offer of a prize of 1000 duoats (£475) for discovering a system of working coal by which abot-firing in fiery mines may be dispensed with. The offer proceeds from the colliery owners of the Ostrau and Karwin mining district (Moravia). The system mast conform to the following conditions : —l. Its application, effect, or explosion must not ignite firedamp er coal dust. 2. II mast not, after explosion or application, generate gases more injurious to miners than those evolved by present methods. S. Its application, charging, remora), firing, &0., must not involve the use of difficult, dangerous, or time - wasting arrangements or complicated apparatus. 4. The system must not be more expensive than present modes of blasting.
