BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.

The ordinary weekly meeting of the Benevolent Institution was held yesterday, at the City Council Chamber. Present—Mr H, S. Wardell, H.M. (chairman, Kev Mr Van Staveren, Rev Mr Pendray, his Worship the Mayor, Messrs S, Dauks and B. Smith. Mr Ingram watted on the meeting for the purpose of asking the institution to assist in sending the wife and children of the unfortunate man Robertson, who was killed at the Woollen Company's works at Petone a short time ago, to their friends at Gloucester, England. Mi, Ingram stated that £25 had already been subscribed in aid of the object, and he asked the Society to vote the remainder, which would amount to about £lO. The Chairman said he questioned very much the right of the Society in voting money for such purposes. Their duty plainly vaa to attend to the immediate wants of the destitute. After some discussion the Kev Mr Van Staveren move! that the amount requisite for the payment of the passages be voted. This was carried. A letter was read from Baron Mollwo, asking for the loan of a sufficient sum of money to buy him some clothes, he having, as he stated, lost everything by the recent fre. The Bacon, who had been lodging in o-ie of the houses destroyed, mentioned that it was in endeavoring to save other persona property that be lost Ms own. Ne action was taken. Accounts for December, amounting to £7l 10s for rations and £46 10s for board and lodging, were passed for payment. The Secre* tary stated that the amounts for the month of December, 1884, were as follow : —Ration?, £7O 2s 8d ; board and lodging, £35 16a 6d. The Treasurer (Mr Powles) stated that a cheque for £250 on behalf of the institution was now being passed through the Treasury. The Rev Mr Pendray mentioned the case of a man who was receiving relief, stating that some persons were interesting themselves, and intended starting him in business. He was very grateful to the Society, and promised to pay back the money he had received whenever be was in a position to do so. The allowance was continued. The meeting then adjourned.
