THE ATHENÆUM.
to rae editor or thb hew Zealand times. Sib, —Might I, through your columns, call the attention of the new Committee of maintaining soma- # ii.iug like order at the institution, particularly in the evenings. It is certainly anabominabla nuisance whana-subscribor, hoping to have a quiet hour over a magazine oruewspaper, finds his oarsassailed by a racket more resembling that of a pandimonimn than anything I know of. Of course those hideous sounds don’t come from the Toung Men’s Christian Association; that they are, however, heard in the reading room goes without saying, as the subscribers who attempt to lead there can only too .well- testify. It appears a grim joke to see those large posters, “ Silence,” in the reading room," and, at the same time, to hear sounds as if Bedlam were let loose in the rooms adjoining. This state of things baa seriously injured the institution. I may also call attention to the unwarrantable time that intervenes between the arrival of the English papers and their distribution to the subscribers. Hoping that with the new Committee some improvement may be looked for,— I am, &c., Subscriber. 'Wellington, June 1, 1885.
