FATAL FIRE IN NELSON.

A WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH. Nelson, August 27.

A five-roomed cottage standing back from Hardy-street was discovered to be on fire about 5 o’clock this evening. The firs was soon extinguished, and then it was found that the occupant (an o!d and well-known and esteemed, especially in musical ciro'cs) Mrs Scaife, senior, had been burnt to death. Mrs Scaife lived by herself, and was not seen later than 3 o’clock, when a visitor left. As tbe remains were found between the fireplace and the door of the sittingroom, it is surmised that her dress became ignited by coming in contact with the grate, and that she then endeavored to escape but fell. The fire then spread to the buildings. The shocking event has created a feeling of deepest grief, Mrs Scaife having been a very old resident, known by nearly everyone.
