Thomas Elamore, a blind organ-grinder, was arrested to-day, under warrant from Nelson, for having had carnal knowledge of his own daughter, aged 19 yours and 2 months, on 24th March last, at the Provincial Hotel. He was remanded to Nelson. Dunedin, July 18. Tho Macetown reefs for 1883 (fourth season) yielded 3337 ounces from 3700 tons of stone. The Invincible mine, at the bead of the Lake, yielded 1184 ounces, but the quantity of stone crushed is not given. In a case brought against the Roslyn Tram Company for injuries sustained by Mrs Lindsay through falling out of the car by reason of its starting before she was properly seated, judgment was given for £6 and costa. The Harbor Board have still forty-nine of the unemployed engaged, - There was a misconception regarding the system of dealing with country produce ou tho railways ; no privileges are withdrawn, the department only trying to avoid double handling, Auckland, July 18. A question has been named at the City Co mcil of declaring a public holiday on the polling day ; but the matter dropped. The Mayor said if tho ratepayers wished it, he would declare a holiday. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce,a letter from Mr Maxwell, general manager of railways, was read, in veply to inquiries previously made by the chamber, re the charges on the New Zealand railways. The letters were so unsatisfactory that it was decided to defer consideration thereof; and, in the meantime, a committee was appointed as a deputation to wait upon tbo Miujster ror raune woncs,- ana attention to the very unsatisfactory reply. The annual dinner of the Auckland Institute of Architects was held here last night. Sir Geo. M. O’Rorke baa been re elected chairman of the University College Council. Christchurch, July 18. The committee on the Methodist Union met on Wednesday and Thursday, After considerable discussion, arrangements were made which it is believed will greatly facilitate the union. All left feeling that the supposed hindrance had been effectually dealt with, and the cause largely promoted. The Young Men’s Club is to be closed, for want of sufficient membership. A monster meeting was held at the Oddfellows’ Hall, at which a resolution was moved in favor of the construction of the West Coast Railway by a syndicate ; but an amendment was carried almost unanimously limiting the resolution to affirmation of the necessity for the immediate construction of the line. Several candidates were present, but took no part in the proceedings.
