Trade continues quiet, but on the whole with a somewhat better feeling than existed at the date of our last month's report, though prices generally of goods do not show much variation, Messrs Stables, Shaker, and Co.’s Australian Circular, of 15th May, states the exports from tile United Kingdom to New Zealand for tho fourweoks ended 3rd May are as follows: Pour weeks ended Previous 3rd May, 1884. four weeks. £ £

The above iiguros show an increase of L 43.400. Ale and Stout—The demand for bulk ale is not active, and sales are for lots. A moderate business has been done in bottled ales during the month, and, as tho demand is limited to the brands of established favorites. In bottled stout an active demand is reported. Among tho sales may be noted 200 cases of Burke’s at full prices. Cornsacks have had noinquiry. Candleshavebeenin fair demand, and we quote —Ue Roubaix (dull of sale) at OJd to 9:fd ; London sperms, 9Jd to to 9 jd; Belmonts, 104 d ; Nationals, lOjd ; Imperials, lod -, paraffine, Hid; fluted paraffine, 10.1(1; for Colonial made candles wo quote Adamantines (Dunedin), isJd ; Southern Cross, 8d to Bpl ; petrolines, BJd ; Stais, 7Sd. Cement —The market is well supplied and prices easier; sales from ship’s sido aro reported at 14s 3d to 11s Gd, and from store, IDs to IDs Od. Dried Bruits—Currants aro in good supply and selling at Did to 5Jd in case ; raisins : muscatels in trays and half boxes have brought Is 2d for good fruit; elemes.dull at Gid ; sultanas in fair request at 7d to 7id ; figs, 9s jier dozen ; 'French plums, no sales reported; Valencia almonds in small request at Is 3d ; dried apples, CJd to 7(1. Fleur —A small parcel lately received is selling slowly at Ll 3 10s to Ll 4. Fish—Salmon, Cutting’s cocktail lias had some attention, and is quoted nt 7s Od to Bs. Regarding the prospects of tlie new catch, Calfornian advices state that the legal salmon-fishing season opened on Ist April, both on the Columbia and Sacramento Rivers. Preparations have not been pushed actively, and on the former river several canneries will not be opened, owing to the unfavorable results last year. "Owing to the light run of salmon, canners have been doing little. It is impossible to predict the future of tins business, as frequently a heavy run of fish just before the close of the season enables the packers to put the average quantity on the market; but it is beyond dispute that tho catch thus far (to May 10th) has been a failure, and canners look forward to a light pack.” Sardines are slow of sale at 8s 3d to 9s 3d for halves, and 5s to •5s 6d for quarters; fresh herrings are quoted at 5s 9d, kippered at 9s 9d to 10s; red herrings, 30s to 325, according to brand. Metals—Corrugated iron is in fair supply, and sales to arrive have been made at L2llos to L 22. From stock we quote L 22 to L 22 10s. Fencing wire has had business at fair rates ; barbed wire is slow of sale at LSI to L 3 5; wire nails are low in stock without alteration in our former price of LlB 10s for assorted parcels; sheet lead has had business at LlB, sheet zinc, L2llos. Oils—Kerosene lias had good business at Is Cd duty paid for 130 test and Is 3Jd in bond for 150 teat oil. Paint oils are without alteration since our last. Castor oil is slow of sale at 3s lOd to 4s ; colza, 4s 9d. Oilmen’s stores have been in moderate demand without change in value. Bice—We quote for japan dressed of good quality, L2010a; Rangoon, LlB. Salt—We may report the market bare of both coarse and fine. Tea—ln anticipation of the new season’s tea which arrived Ecr Tarnsui last Wednesday, importers have een reducing stocks, and largo sales are reported in half-chests at a slight concession in prices. Tapioca—Seed, pearl, and llake_ are worth IJd to 2d ; for small lines 2&d is obtained. Sago, in bags, is selling freely, at ISd to 2d. Coffee—Of trade parcels of Ceylon plantation No, 1, sales are making at pd ; No. 2, BJd. Whole pepper is selling readily at Is Id to Is 2d for white. Sugar Considerable sales of China refined best whites have been made at LSD to L3G in Queensland sugars sales aro reported at LSD 10s to L 36 10s; the new season has commenced, samples of tho crushing having already been received ; it is expected that the shipments will be earlier this year than last; for Sydney Company’s wo quote, 1W LlO 5s to L4O 10s, IC L3G, CL 32 10s. Wines and spirits—ln the former business has been of an ordinary character ; the latter has had a fair demand, and we quote as follows; —Brandies: Hennessy’s X star, 375; do 3 star, 49s in bond; Lncien Beliefs, in case, 21s ; bulk, 7a 3d to 7s Gd ; CVT, 22s per case, and 7s to 7s 3d for bulk ; Gilbey’s, 34s per case ; Martell’s, 30s to 3Gs 6d tor case, and 11s for bulk. Whisky : Kinahan’s is quoted at 21s for case, and 10s to 10s Gd in bulk ; royal blend, 21s ; Lome, 18s Gd to 19s; Burke's Garnkirk and 3 star Irish, 18a to 18s Gd for cose, and Cs Gd to 7s for bulk ; Thom and Cameron’s, 4s 3d ; do Taymoutli, 3s lOd. There has been very little business done in rum, and wo quote Lemon Hart’s, 10 o.p, at 3s lid to 4s : Red Heart, in case, 24s to 255; Golden Fleece, 235. Burnett’s Old Tom, 12s ; Booth’s do, IDs. Geneva, JDKZ, lias had good business, and we quota IDs to 17s according to contents and strength. Colonial Produce—Latest advices from Sydney report a steady demand for prime salt butter at Is 3d to Is Id ; inferior to good, Gd to 9d per lb. Prime butter is quoted here at Sd to Spl. We quote other produce as follows ; —Oats, 2s Gd, with downward tendency: fowls’wheat, of good quality, 2s Gd te 2s 9d ; maize, 4s Gd ; barley, 2s 9d ; oatmeal, LI2 10s ; potatoes, 55s to 60s ; early flukes, L 5 ; beans, 4s ; cheese, od ; hams and bacon without any change in values ; fowls in demand at 3s 9d : turkeys, 9s ; ducks, 4s Cd ; geese, Os tkl i»er p&ir. Apples, from 9s per case.

Messrs Chivy. I’ownall mul Co., scriveners, report that the stagnation in the money market, both as to supply and demand, still continues, interest on mortgage investments remaining at former quotation, viz., 7h to 8 Capital in commercial circles in England is difficult to place at 1 percent., and the position now taken up here by one of the leading banks in materially reducing the rate of discount, should relieve the pressure that has long existed (emanating principally from this particular source), and produce a decided reaction.
