Mutual recriminations between journals published in the same city seem to us inadvisable, but on public grounds wo must protest against the statement which appeared in our evening contemporary yesterday that wo spoke of Major Atkinson as being insulted by the idea of a coalition between him and Sib George Grey. We are not aware that we ever expressed any such statement. We did, indeed, strongly object to mere questionable rumor being published as definite fact with regard to Major Atkinson, but that is a very different matter Circumstances might arise in which the present Premier might find the whole Middle Island arrayed against the North and determined to crush it, and in that case, in justice to the whole colony, any alliance, except b.atweep public men personally disreputable, would bo right and proper. But at present we do npt know of any circumstances which would warrant such a coalition as that suggested. The only evidence the Evening Pest adduces of Uie alleged fact of a Gbey-Atkinson coalition is that Mr Seymour George [says so, and that Mr George is a kinsman of Sir George Grey. P’-9 Post has forgotten to add what is the fact, that Mr George has also boon for years an avowed political enemy of Major Atkinson, and that the circumstance of his being a kinsman as well as supporter of Sir George Grey might lead him to wish for such a combination as that runjored. The wish might bo “ father to the thought.”
