The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Tarawera will arrive from Sydney, Auckland, and East Coast ports to-day, and leaves for Southern ports and Melbourne during tho afternoon. The steamers Wallace from Nelson, Hnia from Wanganui, and Jane Douglas from Foxton, were expected to arrive yesterday, but they diil not put in an appearance, owing no doubt to the heavy southerly gale which set in early yesterday morning. If the weather moderates, they will no doubt arrive this morning, in which case they return to their respective p rts during the clay. The steamers Wakatu for Kaikoura and Lyttelton, and Tui for Wanganui, did not get away yesterday owing to the rough weather prevailing. They are expected to sail to-day. The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Wanaka left Lyttelton at 9.20 pm on Saturday ; experienced fresh southerly winds till shortly after sunrise yesterday, and then a strong S.E. gale with heavy rain till arrival at 2 pm. The cutter Margaret Scollay, which was lying near the Te Aro foreshore, dragged her anchor during yesterday’s gale, and drifted past the Railway Wharf, where her anchor evidently found good holding ground, no damage being done.

ACCIDENT TO THE CABARFFIDH. The barque Cabarfeidh, which left Wellington for Greymouth on Saturday morning, had a narrow escape from being wrecked on Barrett’s Reef. It appears that on nearing the reef the wind fell away, and she drifted on to one of the outer rocks, where she remained fast until she was towed off by the steamer Rotorua about 1.30 p.m. Fortunately there was no sea, there being a alight southerly swell. The accident also occurred almost at dead low water, so that the vessel had an excellent chance of getting off. Captain Anderson, of rua, observed that the barque was in difficulties while he was nearly five miles away, and gave orders to prepare the neecssary gear for rendering assistance, and no delay was thereexperienced in making fast to her. The barque came of! without difficulty, and was towed round to the Patent Slip, where she was to have been taken up and examined. It is believed that the damage ( sustained will prove very slight. The occurrence will be made the subject of an inquiry before the Collector of Customs.
