OAST THY BREAD UPON THE
WATERS, AND THOU SR ALT
FIND IT AFTER MANY
DAYS.
TO TflE EDITOR Of THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES.
Sir, —Tho price of ordinary broad at this time in Wellington (tho capital of New Zealand) is somewhere bordering upon 4d, tha 21b loaf; choicer kinds, are more costly. “Go forth, this, ray message,” says the Maori —“ Cast thy bread upon the waters.” Many of your readers nigh at hand understand the meaning of those advertisements bearing my signature, which from time to time for several weeks, and oven for several years past, have appeared in your columns. They know that a great and crying injustice has been inflicted in this land upon harmless, unoffending people—subjects of Her Majesty- of the Maori race of the Ngatiraukawa tribe. That every path, every avenue, every track, every approach to justice has teen carefully closed, saying to me and to those 1 have tho honor to represent as their authorised agent; “Ye may not enter here 1” Others, again, dwellers beyond the sea, are not aware of all this. It is to them I now desire to address myself—whom I am now desirous of reaching. A certain philosopher once went forth in search of Truth. Let me now and thus “ cast my bread upon the waters.” My case is this—A people, when savages and independent, were merciful to tho prostrate. They are afterwards led to embrace Christianity, and to subject themselves to the dominion of a Christian Queen. Their having been merciful when savages is made to be the cause of their ruin under the Christian Rule 1 My case is one of unscrupulous Anglo-Saxon greed, oppression, injustice, and bad faith triumphant over peaceable Maori submission ! Therefore, thus and thus—l now “Let slip!”—“I cast my bread upon the waters.” —I am, &c.,
