THE POULTRY, PIGEON, CANARY, AND DOG SHOW.

The second exhibitionnf theWellingtonPoultry, Pigeon, Canary, and Dog Association was opened at 2 o’clock Thursday last week, when His Exofileney the Governor attended at the Drillshed, where he was received by His Worship the Mayor, Mr Charles Johnston, M.H.R., and the stewards of the Society. The hall had been gaily festooned with flogs, and the scene, shortly after the arrival of Sir William Jervois, was a most animated one, owing, in a great measure to the very large number of ladies who attended on the occasion. The arrangements made by the Committee appeared to be of the moat perfect character, and evidently gave unqualified satisfaction not only to the public, but also to the exhibitors. The hall is intersected by broad avenues, ou each side of which are stands upon which the cages of tlie different birds are placed, and around the hall are elevated trays for the smaller description of dogs, the larger c mines being ranged on the floor, firmly secured with chains, aud comfortably bedded on sawdust or straw. In the aggregate the exhibits are more numerous..than.those of last year, when the exhibition was held iu St. George’s Hall, the entries in all classes being 110 in excess of those of the first show This excess is more marked as fir as pigeons are concerned. The show of dogs is slightly less than last year. The poultry exhibits are equal to last year’s, but the breed of the different classes is undoubtedly superior. The show of canaries is rather disappointing; nevertheless, there are some re illy beautiful and evidently carefully-bred Belgians shown, especially by Mes-rs D. D, Hyde, H. W. Hope, and J. W. Hill. The pigeon exhibits, however, no doubt, claim, and deservedly so, the pride of place in the exhibition. The variety is almost bewildering, as the judges must have found ; but as judges should do, they have kept "a wary eye,” and their success is shown by the decisions they have made. Messrs A, Elkins and E. E. E bounds have divided the honors iu this class, and it is difficult to say which may be said to carry the palm. The pigeons, perhaps, are scarcely to be so highly commended as aresomtof the birds in other classes. The dragons, however, and also the pouters (two cages only of the latter being shown) were all of them magnificent birds. The pouter heu shown by Mr F, Denton could scarcely be called a match for her mate. Tumblers were in great force. Space precludes a more lengthy notice in this class. The show of poultry may be ch iraotarised as magnificent, whether as regards the number or the breed of the birds shown. Tile gol-lea spangled, and gol I and silver pencilled Hambnrghs, were all that could be desired, whilst the black Hamburgh group, consisting of a cock and two hens, -hown by Mr F. J. France, well deserved the honors it received. The Spanish varieties, so far as numbers went, were slightly dis ippointing, but thsir breed was, iu nearly every instance, exceedingly good. The pride of the show in large birds was certainly most deservedly awarded to Mr F. G. France for a cage of buff Cochin cock and two hens ; not must a dark Brahma o-ok and two bins, exhibited by Mr James Prentice be omitted.. Soma beautiful Polands were shown by Miss M. S. Atkins, Mr A. Elkins, and Mr G. Mills. The display of game cooks was good, but for some reason or other thry did not appear to attract the attention they were entitled to. The Newfoundland dogs can_ scarcely be said to be up to expectation. It is so difficult now-a-daya to gat a true bred dog of this description. A dog shown by Mr W. G. Lankshear, and a slut shown by Mr G. Guthrie, were perhaps the best of their class. The mastiff, as was reasonable to expect, claimed considerable attention, more especially on the part of ladies and youngsters, as also did a couple of Ulmer bear hounds, which, it is stated, are the only specimens of the celebrated German breed in the colony. The only Irish Batter was exhibited by Major Eooles. Of setters, painters, and field spaniels, there was a good variety, but scarcely any of them call for special mention. The greyhound family, .was weil represented,. and some decidedly aristocratic lineage was shown, noticeably by 0. and E. J. Hill, who carried off the majority of the honors in this class. Fox terriers were in great force, and the majority of them obtained a large share of attention and commendation. One of the prettiest sights in the show is a bull terrier slut and Utter of three puppies, exhibited by Mr G. VV. Smart. The mother is pure, the litter, with the exception of one pup, being equally devoid of blemish so far as marks are concerned. It is to bo regretted-that there appears to be almost a total absence of the wireworkers art placed for exhibition. The cages containing the exhibits, where they are not imported, betray a decidedly home-made.* ppearance. There would seem to be a good opening for a wbeworker in this city, A side show, the proprietor of which is Mr F. Bachelor, of Christchurch, attracted considerable attention last evening. The birds, consisting of canaries, bullfinches, and mules, are most industrious, and really set a noble example to some of their fellow-bipeds of the human family, as they are obliged to earn their food and water before they can partake of it. The birds, by a series of ingeniously contrived wheels and windlasses, draw the water they require, and also the seed they eat. There is a great moral contained in this side-show. There are a variety of curious looking incubators and artificial “ mothers ” shown, with complicated appliances, which appear to be theoretically, at any rate, dalcnlated to in time dispense with the natural process of incubation; but it was observable that these '• newfangled notions’.’ were not regarded by the ladies’ with unqualified satisfaction. The show, as a whole, may be pronounced a great success. The Stewards, and the Hon. Secretary (Mr E. E. Edmunds), are to be congratulated upon the satisfactory results which have attended their efforts, not only to cater for the public entertainment, but also to improve the breed of domestic animals. The attendance last evening was highly satisfactory, aud the decisions of the Judges, with, perhaps, but one or two exceptions, appeared to give nio ground for cavil or dispute. The following is the FRIXE LIST. ■ SEOTIOJT 11—PonLTBT. -
